After playing a game, it is of utmost importance that it be analyzed. If you wish to grow stronger, you should attempt to play a serious game with at least 0:15/:20/5 byo-yomi.
After playing the serious game, whether you played very poorly or very well, the following guidelines for review are suggested.
- Review as soon as possible after playing!
- Review can take more than double the playing time -- it's ok!
- Review done with a stronger player helping is very good!
- The questions in the following section should be asked and analyzed during review...
- Joseki:
- What mistakes were made?
- After the first diversion, what is the best follow-up?
- Why is the joseki move better than the diversion?
- Fuseki
- Were all points taken big?
- Was some group left too weak? (Without adequate compensation)
- Was some group needlessly strengthened?
- Are your positions too low?
- Are your opponent's positions too high? (Especially when they could have been forced lower)
- Is adequate thought given to both moyo and [more] "solid" territory?
- Attack and Defense
- Are any threats made ignoreable (e.g. not a threat)?
- Did you respond where you should have and not where you shouldn't?
- Did you push your opponent against any weak groups? (Family feud)
- Did you miss any good threats?
- Did you make any small moves? (Less than ~10 points)
- Life and Death
- Did you kill what could be killed?
- Did you live or die due to a L+D mistake?
- Was it better to sacrifice your group?
- Was your invasion too deep?
- Why did you lose connection to the center?
- When was your group not adequately protected (if not an invasion)?
- Endgame
- Did you take the biggest points first?
- Did you retain sente where possible?
- (Especially if reviewing with someone stronger) Did you miss any endgame tesuji?
- Ko
- Were all kos played bigger than other moves on the board?
- Was the correct threat ignored / responded to?
- Did you enter Ko too soon (with too few threats)?
- Was Ko avoidable?
- Tesuji and Reading
- Do you see anything in review that you couldn't in game?
- Do you see why a Tesuji-threat is a real threat (especially if you ignored it in game)
- General Comment: Analyze close-contact positions as thoroughly as possible according to your own ability.
Tesuji and Reading is a sticking-point... it often requires someone with better reading skills then you to see them, though you should have a better chance when reviewing (rather than playing with a time limit). In order to improve your ability you must practice reading out positions that you didn't have time for in game. Eventually this reading will become natural and quicker (and with it, your rank will go up).
